.tera Protocol, Client released

Billed as ‘a secure successor to the torrent protocol’, tera was simultaneously announced and released as an open-source project earlier today.

Although the two protocols have many similar features, .tera contains several privacy-focused upgrades. The protocol obfuscates user information is such a way that no one – not even the end-user – can tell where a user is downloading files from. .tera data-packets are also partially disguised so as to look like ‘normal’ network traffic, though this feature has been described as ‘not optimal, yet’ by the protocol’s developers, three Stanford graduate students.

The developers have also released a client, TeraNet, for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
